The Greenport/Mattituck/Southold/Shelter Island Porters football team bounced back from an opening game loss to Babylon to win 36-6 against Wyandanch on Sept. 17.

Porters running back Tom Filipkowski scored twice during the Porter's first away game of the season at Wyandanch, sprinting 35 yards to the end zone in the first quarter. Quarterback Michael Mangiemele threw two touchdown passes to receiver Yianni Rauseo, who rushed 78 yards to score his first.

Defensive coordinator Michael Miller said he saw a lot of promise in his players as they battled Wyandanch for their first victory of the season, though there is always room for improvement.

"If you look at the score against Wyandanch, you would think we played very well," he said. "Unfortunately like a lot of teams, we played down to our competition. A lot of mistakes were made on both sides of the ball but some of that is from the short week of preparation that we had.

The coach added that with hard work, every player on his team could be a starter.

"But will they put the time and energy in to proving it to themselves and the coaching staff?" he said.
